Sassparilla Jug Band played a howling show to open up the Think Swing! Jazz and Blues Festival, and they were holding back. For the closer, the Oregon group relied on a cigar-box guitar and the sound suddenly, and surprisingly, took on something more akin to a metal edge than jazz. But the swing dancers on the floor were willing to stuck with it as the drummer stood up and banged out while pounded on her plastic buckets like a maniac. Before that the jug band worked the crowd with two washboards, an expert harp player, a charismatic washtub percussabasist, a rompin’ fiddler, and group vocals. These guys tore it up. I’m hoping they come to The Zombie Room some day and play their more rockin’ set.
