Bio: Melson was instrumental in Jefferson High's run to Oregon Class 5A state championships in his junior and senior seasons. Named Oregon 5A state player of the year as a senior. Averaged 24.3 points. Poured in 52 versus Franklin. Scored 40 points in Northwest Shootout (Washington vs. Oregon all-star game). Averaged 20.2 points and 5 assists as a junior. Recruited by Oregon State, Washington, Colorado State, Colorado, Drake, Oregon and Washington State. Ranked 148th overall in the 2014 class by Rivals.com.
Sr. Scouting report: Starting guard is one of team’s most reliable players. Portland native considered one of the Zags' best athletes. Standout perimeter defender often assigned to opponent’s best guard. One of team’s most experienced players. Starts at shooting guard but can also play point guard or wing. Averaging 31.5 minutes, second most on the team, through first 24 games. Shooting 38.8 percent beyond 3-point arc and hitting career-best 87.5 percent at free-throw line. Averaging career-high 10.6 points and 3.4 rebounds. Hitting 44.8 percent of 3s in WCC games. Opened senior season with four double-digit efforts in first five games. Scored 21 points in victory over Creighton. Posted career-highs with seven 3s and 23 points in rout over Portland on Jan. 11. Career-high six assists vs. Portland on Jan. 25.
Jr. Scouting report: Made four starts and played in all 39 games. Averaged 7.2 points and hit career-best 39.1 percent of 3-pointers. Scored season-high 17 points against Utah Valley. Delivered 12 points and a key 3-pointer in comeback win over Florida at AdvoCare Invitational in Orlando. Scored 15 points in victory over Mississippi Valley State. Tallied seven points against West Virginia in Sweet 16 victory. Made 5 of 12 3-pointers (42 percent) in NCAA Tournament.
So. Scouting report: Played in all 36 games and started versus UCLA. Averaged 6.6 points and 21.7 minutes per game. Scored 18 points against San Diego and connected on five 3-pointers versus San Francisco. Played key role in Zags' second-half improvement that resulted in GU's 18th straight NCAA Tournament berth.
