Seattle film festival targets children moviegoers

Dan Webster

In addition to the two local film festivals that are coming in February – the 23rd Spokane International Film Festival and the 17th Spokane Jewish Cultural Film Festival – another regional festival is coming.

This one is the Children’s Film Festival Seattle, sponsored by Northwest Film Forum, that will begin Feb. 11. Like the two local events, the Seattle-based festival will be accessible both in-person and – fortunately for those of us living on this side of the Cascades – online.

The festival, which was founded in 2005, will offer “nearly 160 animated and live-action films from 43 countries.” Not bad for a festival that promises to be “tailored for families to enjoy at home and in the theater.”

“We see the need for youth and families to have some fun and celebrate the beauty in the world,” says first-year festival director Kendra Ann Sherrill. “We are excited to host a joyful extravaganza that will spark delight, discussion, and interest in different cultures and ways of life. We can’t wait to welcome patrons to this year’s festival!”

Sherrill, by the way, is a former Spokane resident and former Spokane International Film Festival board member. She also is a filmmaker in her own right.
