Millions of people watched President Barack Obama’s motorcade cruise down Pennsylvania Avenue on the way to his inauguration this month.  Anyone who looked closely may have noticed his limo, ‘The Beast’ featured a license plate that reads “Taxation Without Representation.”  The plate is a rolling protest for equal voting rights in Washington D.C.  Per Obama’s request similar plates will soon be added to the vehicles in his presidential fleet.

CNN reports, “While Washington, D.C., with a population of 617,996 people, elects a delegate to the U.S. House of Representatives–currently Rep. Eleanor Holmes Norton–the delegate does not have voting privileges on the House floor. The delegate, however, is permitted to debate and vote in committees on which he or she serves.

The Virgin Islands, Guam, and American Samoa are also represented by a delegate, while Puerto Rico has a resident commissioner in Congress.”

Washington D.C’s Department of Motor Vehicles began using the slogan “Taxation Without Representation” on license plates about 13 years ago.  President Bill Clinton used one on his presidential limousine while President George W. Bush opted to remove the slogan from his.

In a showing of solidarity Obama vehicles will sport the protest plates throughout his second term to illustrate his “"commitment to the principle of full representation for the people of the District of Columbia."

Where were these plates during the American Revolution when we were supposed to have sorted this out?
