Tax Commission opens annual meeting, talks customer service…

Idaho’s state Tax Commission is holding its annual meeting this afternoon in the Lincoln Auditorium; you can watch live here. “We are a customer service organization,” Commissioner Eliot Werk said as the meeting opened. “Everything we do at the Tax Commission has to do with serving customers – that is what we do.” Today’s meeting will include a panel discussion on how the Tax Commission could provide better customer service.

Werk said in 2015, the commission has handled 132,000 inquiries from taxpayers, either walk-ins or phone calls. It’s processed more than 2.4 million tax transactions, and issued $350 million in refunds. It also stopped 1,170 fraudulent returns and kept more than $1.7 million from being refunded to criminals, to date.

Werk said the commission believes taxpayers have the “right to pay only the tax that they owe.”
