Of name-changing, education and grammar…

Idaho’s Professional-Technical Education, or PTE, program is changing its name to Career-Technical Education, or CTE; that’s what it’s called nationally, and legislation sponsored by the state Board of Education to make the change has cleared the Senate with just one dissenting vote and is pending in the House Education Committee.

Senate President Pro-Tem Brent Hill, R-Rexburg, cast that one dissenting vote. Asked why, he said it’s not a big deal, but he had a grammatical issue with the change. “Career is a noun, it’s not an adjective,” he said. Plus, he said, “Professional has to do with the quality of the work.” He didn’t think “career” had the same cachet. “It may to them, but it didn’t to me,” he said.
