Wildfire smoke hits unhealthy levels in Idaho City; H&W offers coping tips

Smoke from wildfires is seriously impacting air quality in some parts of southern and central Idaho, the Idaho Department of Health & Welfare reports, including intermittently “unhealthy” and “very unhealthy” pollution levels in Idaho City and nearby communities. That’s due to the nearly 10,000-acre Pioneer Fire north of Idaho City, which is also the main cause of the “moderate” air quality warnings currently in effect for the Treasure Valley and the Magic  Valley. In addition, the Comet Fire north of Salmon is impacting air quality there, which is now also in the “moderate” category.

“Older adults, infants, children and people with medical conditions such as asthma, lung disease, and heart disease are more sensitive to poor air quality and may want to take precautions when air quality is moderate or worse,” H&W advises. “People who use inhalers for asthma or other conditions should keep them close at hand. Everyone is advised to seek medical treatment for uncontrolled coughing, wheezing, choking, or if breathing difficulties continue after they move indoors.”

The department also offers these tips: Everyone should avoid heavy work or exercise outdoors when the air quality index reaches unhealthy levels; stay well-hydrated by drinking plenty of water; stay in or seek out air-conditioned places; and switch from contact lenses to eyeglasses. The Pioneer Fire is now up to 9,411 acres with 903 personnel working on fighting it. It’s 33 percent contained with an estimated containment date of Aug. 5. State Highway 21 is closed from mile marker 48 north of Idaho City to mile marker 72.5 south of Lowman.
