New version of Ybarra’s rural-school centers bill gets unexpected fast-track treatment
State schools Superintendent Sherri Ybarra pitched a new version of her rural-schools center legislation today in the House Education Committee, seeking just to get the bill printed to jump-start negotiations for next year, Idaho Education News reports, but the committee surprised her by skipping a hearing and sending the bill directly to the full House. It would launch a single center to serve rural school districts in North Idaho as a pilot project next year, though it’s unclear how it would be funded; the public schools budget already has been set.
Rep. Sage Dixon, R-Ponderay, who supported fast-tracking the bill, said, “I know the superintendents in my district are very excited.” Ybarra said, “It just goes to show legislators truly want to do the right thing for our children in Idaho and they are excited about moving forward and I’m excited that they made this a priority.” You can read a full report here from EdNews reporter Clark Corbin.
