House debating $8M addition to Legislative Legal Defense Fund

The House is now debating SB 1428, the bill to deposit $8 million into the legislative legal defense fund for a possible settlement with vendors in the Idaho Education Network case. Rep. Phylis King, D-Boise, said, “This is $8 million to go into a slush fund. I’m still going to vote no.”

House Speaker Scott Bedke said "I wholly reject the concept of slush fund." The money is to go to court cases, at the request of Bedke and Senate President Pro-Tem Brent Hill; the two told JFAC earlier that they hope a settlement in the IEN case will occur after lawmakers adjourn this year, and any portion of the $8 million that's not needed for that can go to ongoing sage grouse litigation with the federal government.
