Truck fees panel calls for input at Oct. 4 meeting; sign up by Sept. 22

A legislative interim committee on truck registration fees is inviting input from stakeholders at a meeting set for Oct. 4 at the state Capitol. It will be the first meeting of the Commercial Vehicle Annual Registration Fee Committee, a panel of 10 lawmakers charged with studying registration fees imposed on commercial vehicles, and potential weight/distance operating fees for all commercial vehicles and for farm vehicles that weigh over 60,000 pounds.

It’s a hot topic, after a state-commissioned cost-allocation study in 2010 showed car owners are overpaying for Idaho roads while heavy trucks underpay. But lawmakers have been reluctant to impose major fee hikes on the trucking industry.

The legislative interim committee, co-chaired by Senate Transportation Chairman Bert Brackett and House Transportation Chairman Joe Palmer, will meet at 9 a.m. in room EW 41. Those who want to offer testimony are asked to contact Elizabeth Bowen in the Legislative Services Office by Sept. 22, at (208) 334-4851 or ebowen@lso.idaho.gov.
