Down To Earth

Complete Streets needs you

It's Sunday morning and you know what that means.  Fill up your cup of coffee, gather your thoughts, and do what's right for Spokane.  Yep, that's right.  It's time for another installment of "Contact Your Representatives."

This time the Spokane County Commissioners need to hear from you in support of connectivity.  Why connectivity you ask?  Well for starters, connectivity is an important component of a Complete Streets policy.  Here's what Futurewise has to say, "Connectivity provides a system of streets that offer multiple routes and connections allowing ease of movement for cars, bikes and pedestrians.  [It] provides better coordination and consistency with other jurisdiction's streets.  [It] saves the county and tax payers money by making it easier to service these areas with transit, emergency services and better interjurisdictional cooperation."

Here's the issue, courtesy of Futurewise:
"Spokane County has recently drafted a major amendment to County's Subdivision Ordinance regarding street connectivity. It's pretty darned good! But recently some latecomer fans of cal de sacs and gated communities have tried to derail the effort. Let's be there to back up the county when they are doing the right thing."  If you feel compelled, visit Futurewise's "Take Action" page and in less than five minutes you can send a note to the County Commissioners telling them there is community support for greater connectivy.

You can also go the extra mile by attending the hearing  that will be held on January 26, 2010 beginning at 5:30 p.m. in the Commissioners Hearing Room located at 1026 West Broadway Avenue, Spokane, WA.
