Bike to Work Spokane news and upcoming events

Hopefully you've all had wonderful morning commutes the last two mornings.  Monday's commute to start Bike to Work Week was easy thanks to the pancakes and coffee courtesy of Mountain Gear and The Roasthouse,  And in case you left the Kick-Off breakfast early (work, what a drag),  Spokane Mayor Mary Verner spoke and surprised the spandex-clad crowd with an announcement that Spokane had been awarded Bike Friendly City Bronze status by the American League of Bicyclists. Read below to see some recent cycling news and a sampling of upcoming events.

In other news:

Paul Turner of the Spokesman-Review had a sharp little feature piece in the paper over the weekend talking about the diversity found in cyclists, or "you people" as we're often referred by.

Then Monday, the S-R ran a Q and A with one of our favorite people in Spokane, John Speare.  It was a fun back and forth with John where, as he always does, he reminds us all that at the core, bicycling is fun.  Check it out HERE.

Upcoming events:

Don't forget to stop by one of the many Energize Stations tomorrow morning on your ride.  They can be found countywide.  Businesses and organizations sponsor a site and offer beverages and small snacks to fuel you on your ride.  Location are on the Bike To Work Spokane website and also after the jump.

Most importantly, join us tomorrow evening at 7 p.m. for the Ride of Silence, a new offering to Spokane's Bike To Work Week this year.  This organized event, part of a national movement, is to draw attention to the need for increased awareness among everyone who shares the road. The assembly point will be at Sprague and Division where a white “ghost bike” memorializes David Squires, killed March 2, 2010 when he was hit by a driver who reportedly had been drinking.
