Pound for Pound
The hit show The Biggest Loser has partnered with General Mills and Feeding America to create the Pound for Pound Challenge.
For every pound a registered participant loses, $.10 will be donated to Feeding America- enough to provide a pound of food to local food banks.
For those of us looking to shed our holiday gain, this is a great way to lose weight and give to the community at the same time. Each pound you lose will equal one pound the food banks gain.
Registration is simple. Better yet, it's free. And while General Mills may use your information to market their own products, they will not sell your information to third parties without your consent. So you can pledge without fear of diet pill spam clogging your inbox.
And for those of us who need a little help to work off our wobbly bits, the website provides diet and exercise tips, healthy recipes, and motivational training videos.
The registration window is open from December 15, 2008 through April 27, 2009. Once pledged, return to the website between April 1 and May 5 to report your total weight loss. Each pound shed will help feed America.
There is a limit though. Only two pounds lost per week (aggregate) can count towards the pledge. I assume this is to encourage healthy weight loss- otherwise they could call the program 'Starve to Feed'.
$100,000 is the minimum donation committed to Feeding America with the max set at $500,000. If ten cents buys one pound of groceries, then $500,000 buys five million pounds of food for families in need.
Who wouldn't want to be a part of that?

Not looking to lose weight? You can still participate by mailing in Pound for Pound seals off General Mills products or donate directly to Feeding America at https://secure2.convio.net/a2h/site/Donation2?df_id=3980&3980.donation=form1&s_src=W09OPDPD.
The results will be announced during the season finale of The Biggest Loser, scheduled for May 12, 2009.
