Incredible speeds in the luge event

SOCHI - OK, I have been to one Olympic luge event now, so that makes me an expert, right?

Seriously. That is one fast sport. The luge event is considered the most dangerous of all the events and I gained an appreciation for why that's the case tonight. l ventured up to the mountain site of these Olympic games and watched the women compete. I walked the venue and stood at several vantage points, sometimes less than 20 feet from the human rockets racing on packed snow and ice. If you are not careful, you can miss them as they whiz by. It's hard to anticipate when they will come into your view, making it more difficult to appreciate the skill and style of each competitor.

The venue was not packed with fans, but those who were there appeared to be diehards. The trek into the scenic Ural Mountains is an added bonus. Spectators took buses or the train up to the site. Either mode was about a 45-minute ride. Once there, it's another 10-minute ride by cable car up to the facility. And yes, there were hot dogs and beer for sale at the top.
