Part of the fun of travel is in the planning, the endless discussions of "where should we go next?"

We study maps and calendars and with the pandemic continuing to rage, try to be realistic about where we can safely go.

One of our recent "what if" discussions was launched by the very real reminder of where we've been, which arrives every Friday in Bellingham. Seeing the Alaska ferry docked in Bellingham's Fairhaven neighborhood stirs sweet memories of one of our favorite journeys of all time. After driving the Alaska Highway and exploring the state in 2018, we took the relaxing route home via the Marine Highway. So many magical moments from that three-day passage included sightings of eagles and whales and vast swaths of forest with no sign of human life.

So, on a walk after dinner this past week, we started kicking around the idea of doing the ferry trip again and the next thing you know, we're checking the schedule and the fares and, well... we just might take the leap. Stay tuned.
