Going Mobile

Flashback Friday: November delivers the RV memories

November is here and -- oh wow, man! -- we’re experiencing some flashbacks.  It’s that familiar Going Mobile wanderlust, built over six years of eventful travels this month.

In our history as RV travelers, November has been a big month. This year, we’re staying put in Seattle, but that hasn’t stopped us from reminiscing -- and feeling a little blue -- as we look back over our past autumn wanderings.

We’re calling this our November Friday Flashback Edition.

November 2018 -- It was a year of firsts: Our inaugural visits to Sedona, Ariz., the Grand Canyon and Death Valley. Minds were blown, and those spots have become go-to destinations over the years. We also hit Zion National Park, visited Las Vegas for Thanksgiving and even won a bundle playing keno. Yowza!

November 2019 -- We turned our attention to the California Coast and fell in love with Mendocino County. Our slow tour south along the coast took us to Bodega Bay, then we zigged east for a memorable stay in Yosemite National Park before heading back to the Bay Area for Thanksgiving in San Francisco. Oh, and we visited Half Moon Bay for the first time in the rig and we were hooked.

November 2020 -- It was a pandemic -- hey, remember that? We still managed to get out during those periods of isolation, traveling to Whidbey Island and Port Townsend for some exceptional regional visits.

November 2021 -- Oh, New Mexico -- you gave us a lot of fun firsts that year. We soaked, hiked and camped at Ojo Caliente near Taos, did a deep dive into Albuquerque and then went south to Truth or Consequences for more hot springs time on the Rio Grande. As we drove west, we checked out a remote state park called City of Rocks -- a place so cool and memorable we keep talking about going back every year. We still haven’t made it -- maybe 2025?

November 2022 -- We were older and wiser, or so we thought. John drove solo to Santa Rosa, Calif., then Leslie flew in after her own solo trip to Memphis. Then it was a return to Mendocino County for a long stay, followed by a deep dive into Sonoma and Marin County.

November 2023 -- Again, we went different directions for a minute. Leslie attended a Hollywood premiere of “The Marvels,” which her sister Laurel had worked on, while John camped and hiked at Chaco Culture National Historical Park. Then it was an exciting trip through Arizona with fantastic stops in Winslow, Sedona and Tucson, where we had wonderful stays at a trio of stellar state parks: Homolovi, Dead Horse Ranch and Catalina.

It’s been a fun ride, thanks to our RV. If you’d like to take a deep dive into our November journeys over the years, check out our Facebook and Instagram pages for more photos. We’ll be back on the road next month!

Victoria RVing tip

We just finished a month-long stay in Victoria, British Columbia and decided to take the Black Ball Ferry to Port Angeles. The Black Ball is a privately-run ferry crossing, leaving from the inner harbor of Victoria.

It was there that we discovered an interesting RV option: Many Canadian RVers park their rigs overnight in the Black Ball parking lot for the next morning’s sailing, staying on site. This option allows RVers an amazing oceanfront stay in downtown Victoria and also sets them up for a trip southward, taking U.S. 101 instead of traffic-snarled Interstate 5.

Toques off to these clever Canadian RVers!
