Mayor Bloem Answers Troxel Question

An exchange between KGA (AM-1510) talk-show host Dick Haugen and CdA Mayor Sandi Bloem about the DUI arrest Saturday involving Van Troxel follows:

Dick Haugen (On The Road w/Dick Haugen) Have you been debriefed about the Van Troxel situation by Wendy Carpenter?

Sandi Bloem: Yes. The officer on duty felt there was some reason to question and did so. They are doing everything they can to speed up the results, so Van Troxel doesn't have to sit and wait. That's the thing to do. If Chief Carpenter and the city feels a mistake was made, we will be the first to apologize. Both officers have been talked to and had an opportunity to share why they made their decision. ... When we have all the answers, then the appropriate thing will happen. I know Van Troxel. I appreciate Van Troxel's comments in the paper.

More Mayor Bloem: How many of us at 2 or 2:30 in the morning, awakened and a little bit groggy, we might not be as able at taking a test as we would be at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. We want to make sure everyone is treated as fairly as possible. After we have the answers, we'll own up to what we have to own up to.

Dick Haugen: Is it safe to say apology papers are being written?
Sandi Bloem: I agree with you that he's a very popular coach and he's a quality guy. I want only the best for them. And I want the best for the officers. They wouldn't have done what they did unless they'd seen something. We're trying to put ourselves in Van's shoes. We're also trying to understand what it's like to be an officer at 2 in the morning.
