Parent: My Son Suffered Van Troxel Treatment from Cops

Originally printed at 1:19 a.m. Saturday

I wish I could have caught your blog on the arrest of Van Troxel for DUI. The exact same thing happened to my 20 yr old son about 3 or 4 months ago. When I was reading the article I was just shaking my head and thinking you could have put his name in there and it would have been almost identical to what happened to him. He works a job that mostly requires him to work late hours and he got off late one night and dropped his girlfriend off at their apartment (she works at the same business.) They wanted to make breakfast so he was going to run out to Walmart and he had just gone a little ways and the cop pulled him over. The officer said he was crossing over the center line so he arrested him for DUI. He passed the breathalyzer, failed the field sobriety test, and so the officer arrested him and took him to the station and gave him a drug test. He had told him he just got off work and he still had his uniform on. The difference came from the fact that my son had to walk home in the middle of the night and had to pay to get his truck out of impound. They told him his results would be back in about 2 weeks. He called them to find out the results and couldn’t get an answer from them. We told him to keep calling because that was his right and someone from the police department told him if he didn’t quit calling they would file harassment charges on him. He just finally found out that the drug test came back negative only because he finally got a public defender and she found out for him. The sad thing is my son has always wanted to get into law enforcement and now he has to go to court to get this off his record.
