Big Mac: It’s Not Free Money

Big Mac: I get it, DFO, and although I have some philosophical objections to urban renewal agencies, I am not a rabid anti-LCDCer. I supported the new library, the Kroc center, and the ed corridor. I am even trying to get LCDC to help fund a new home for the Museum of North Idaho. It just seems disingenuous to say “free money!” when the money is not free. The city has lost that revenue to LCDC.

DFO: The money hasn't been lost to LCDC b/c it has been used to add incredible value to Coeur d'Alene. Again, go through the list of projects you've named. There are many more. Then consider what would be there without boost from urban renewal. Then, consider how much money will flow into city coffers 8 years from now when the URD's expire. That mayor and council will reap a bonanza. Now consider how well these URD-assisted projects have been done. Kroc Center, Coeur d'Alene Library, Ed Corridor, Spokane River frontage along Mill River. Riverstone. Don't you think the people to trust at this point are the ones who have pulled off these projects against the odds. Or the individuals who have fought these projects tooth and nail. Are Sandi Bloem & the 3 progressive council members to be thrown under the bus now in favor of council members who have fought progress at every turn?
