Trail Beerfest Returns To McEuen

County Institutes Merit Pay Raises 

If I'm reading the Kootenai County press release correctly, commissioners have approved a 3% pay raise for county workers. But they're letting department heads decide which workers should get more than 3% and which should get less. That's part of a nearly $89M budget proposal for the county in FY2016, a $1.5M budget increase.

KCSD IDs Man Killed In Shootout

The man killed in a shootout with Bonner County deputies and a Sandpoint police officer has been identified as Casey George Alarcon, 34, of Sandpoint. According to a KCSD news release, Alarcon fired 2 shots at the officers before he was fatally wounded by return fire from one of the deputies.

The University of Washington beat Washington State University in last year’s Apple Cup, and Husky head coach Chris Petersen’s team finished with a better record than Mike Leach’s Cougars. Hazmat Situation Sickens Workers

Workers at Pacific Steel and Recycling in north Spokane accidentally punctured a barrel Wednesday morning, releasing a yellow vapor plume that sickened workers there and at a nearby city building. Nearly 100 firefighters and paramedics responded to Pacific Steel, 1114 N. Ralph St., where hazmat crews hosed workers off.

Oath Keepers Block Mine Access 20 

Marshall Swearingen of the High Country News reports of the tense standoff occuring at a mine site near Lincoln, Mont., between the USFS and the constitutionalist Oath Keepers. The USFS says the mine owner is out of compliance with federal rules. The well-armed Oath Keepers are on the site to protect the owner's mining rights.

Prison Health Care Prompts Sanction 

A federal judge has sanctioned Idaho for misleading the court about medical and mental health care for inmates. The ruling from U.S. District Judge David Carter means that the Idaho Department of Correction will remain under the court's supervision until at least the fall of 2017. Moore, 51, was acquitted of a hate crime charge last week by convincing a jury he was acting in defense of his home when he allegedly used a gay slur while physically removing his gay son and another man from a shower.
