Idaho exchange rates to rise 7-26% 

Health insurance plans in Idaho will see rate increases next year, the AP reports, ranging from 7 percent to 26 percent. Idaho Department of Insurance Director Dean Cameron said he did not find any proposed rate changes to be unreasonable.

Guard deployed to Tower Fire

The Idaho Air National Guard deployed 40 members today to support firefighting efforts for the Tower Fire, which is nearing the Washington-Idaho line in North Idaho. The Guard members were placed on active duty on Aug. 26 at the order of Gov. Butch Otter; they will operate control points on roads leading into the fire area near Priest Lake.

Gunman kills news team in Virginia, himself 

A former reporter who had been fired by a Virginia television station shot and killed two of the station’s journalists as they broadcast live on Wednesday morning, officials said, recording the act on video himself and then posting the video online. He later took his own life, officials said.

Update: Judge allows body cam video 

SReporter Scott Maben filed a report after listening to this morning's proceedings in the shooting of Coeur d'Alene police Sgt. Greg Moore. Jonathan Daniel Renfro, 27, of Rathdrum is facing first-degree murder charges. The judge has allowed intro of Moore's body cam video over defense attorney objections.

Ancient Cedars Should Survive Fire

Ancient trees in the Ross Creek Cedar Grove in NW Montana should survive the Sawtooth blaze. The fire is burning less than a mile to the SW of the 100-acre grove, which contains 500 to 1,000 year old western red cedar trees. Some of the trees in the grove are 8 feet in diameter, and were already mature whehen Columbus set sail for the New World.

Oldest Post Falls Biz Nears End? 

The Slab Inn, the oldest continuing business in Post Falls, is for sale and in jeopardy of closing. Randy and Deb Berlin, who have owned the bar for the past 19 years, have the business for sale for $725,000. "It's been a struggle the past three years just keeping up with the bills and taxes and the clientele is declining," Deb said.

State Rep. Heather Scott, R-Blanchard, tells Betsy Russell/Eye on Boise that she was defending free speech when she displayed the American flag on her float at the Priest River Timber Days parade. But Tony Stewart of the Kootenai County Task Force on Human Relations called the flag "a symbol of discrimination."

Now that Carter's 90 and facing terminal health problems, Trillhaase applauds him for being candid, even when it wasn't popular.
