Bergdahl to face court martial on 2 counts 61 

A top Army commander on Monday ordered that Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl face a court-martial on charges of desertion and endangering troops stemming from his decision to leave his outpost in 2009, prompting a huge manhunt in the wilds of eastern Afghanistan and landing him in nearly five years of harsh Taliban captivity.

Man found dead in downtown CdA

A 22-year-old Hayden man was found dead early Sunday in downtown Coeur d'Alene. Coeur d'Alene police officers were called at 12:45 a.m. to investigate a suspicious vehicle. They discovered Richard E. Baumgartner in the vehicle parked in a lot near North Third Street and East Indiana Avenue. He was unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head.

Idaho still without new federal judge 

A Boise attorney who was a controversial prospect for Idaho’s vacant federal judgeship is no longer being considered, multiple sources say. Meanwhile, down to just one U.S. District Court judge, the court in Idaho is bringing in visiting judges from Colorado, Washington, California and elsewhere to hear Idaho cases.

At least Obama kept speech short 

In his Saturday column for the Lewiston Tribune, conservative Michael Costello gave President Obama props for keeping his Sunday speech short. Costello was more impressed by the brevity of the president's speech than the content of the speech, especially the part that related to gun control to counter domestic terrorism.

Bikini stand stirs coffee, controversy 

It might be December, but at Kisses Espresso, it's always swimsuit weather. The baristas who work at the former Pink Spot drive-up coffee stand, located at 3023 N. Government Way in Coeur d'Alene, have somewhat unusual uniforms — bikinis. Except for Workout Wednesdays. Then it's yoga pants and sports bras.

Hayden city administrator quits 

Stefan Chatwin is no longer Hayden’s city administrator. Chatwin, who worked for the city since 2009, submitted his letter of resignation effective Wednesday. “He is just looking for something else. He wanted to go in another direction,” Mayor Ron McIntire said.

Otter: Idaho to comply w/prison rape law 

Governor C.L. Butch” Otter today sent a letter to U.S. Attorney General Loretta E. Lynch formally notifying her that Idaho will comply with the Prison Rape Elimination Act. He says a recent review of the Act by members of the Idaho Criminal Justice Commission shows Idaho is now able to declare its intent seeking PREA compliance.

Idaho to appeal 'ag-gag' ruling 16 

Just when you thought Idaho GOP leaders would be hesitant to waste more money on frivilous lawsuits, the state announced today that it would appeal a U.S. District Court decision overturning the state's "ag-gag law." The law was passed by the state Legislature making it a crime to surreptitiously videotape agricultural operations.

Abortion rate hits record low 17 

The U.S. abortion rate has declined by more than one-third over the past two decades to a record low, federal officials reported Friday. Abortions fell 35 percent between 1990 and 2010, reaching 17.7 procedures per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44.
