Mercury spills shuts Post Falls school 

A mercury spill in a high school science lab has closed the Immaculate Conception St. Dominic school and church until a hazmat team can handle it. Kootenai Fire and Rescue EMS Chief Steve Isaacson said the school science department had three 2-ounce bottles of mercury stored in a locker in the science lab.

Lineman to work on Thanksgiving 

More than 100 crews of linemen are deployed across Spokane neighborhoods hardest hit by last week’s windstorm. Power has been out for nine days for about 12,000 customers and Avista Utilities reported Wednesday that it hoped to restore power to most today. The crews will continue working on Thanksgiving.

Shopper catches coupon snafu 

An Albertsons shopper said he was overcharged for two turkey breasts last week, and the way it happened has him wondering if someone [Click and drag to move] had a thumb on the scale. “I had a very troubling purchase at Albertsons tonight, which I can't help but think is fraud,” James McKenzie said in an email message to The Press last week.

CdA Charter Academy adds fine arts wing 

Fine arts classes at Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy got a much-needed upgrade over the weekend with the opening of a new wing of the school. Construction on the fine arts wing — which will house all of the band, choir, drama and art classes for grades six through 12 — began last spring.

No Thanksgiving power for 5,000

A warm Thanksgiving meal at home may be out of reach for thousands of people even as linemen race to restore electricity to homes battered and blacked out by last week’s windstorm. Avista said late Tuesday that 18,000 customers remained without power. And at least 5,000 are not expected to have power by Thursday.

The Coeur d'Alene Press reports: "With $15.5 million to spend on discretionary projects, including facility upgrades, Kootenai County commissioners are bantering and prioritizing numerous projects. With the hefty fund balance, commissioners are in the early stages of prioritizing needs to address issues without raising taxes."

Well, he columnizes, prepare for a coronary. The bit-by-bit additions in a child's account will be eaten away by service charges as it gains very little interest.

Idaho pays $34K more in marriage case 

Idaho’s state Board of Examiners, which consists of the governor, the Attorney General, and the Secretary of State, has approved an additional payment of $34,502.70 to the attorneys who successfully represented four same-sex couples in their lawsuit challenging Idaho’s ban on gay marriage.

As I mentioned Monday, I operated a 90-pound jackhammer for awhile, as a neighbor and I dug the concrete from the post holes in the fence that we set 25-plus years ago.
