Here's what the North Shore Hotel looked like when I arrived on the scene in September 1982. I ate one of my best meals ever at the old Cloud 9 Restaurant, as a visiting editor of Duane Hagadone's newspaper in Kalispell, Mont. The Cloud 9 tower now serves as the bottom 7 floors of the Coeur d'Alene Resort. That parking lot you see -- and Templin's Restaurant and some bungalows for rent that you don't see -- is now part of the front lawn of the resort.
