My Grandma used to joke that if they ever paved the streets of Athol she was going to close up her craft shop and move away. Most of the streets remained unpaved in her lifetime, but Athol definitely changed. There are two gas stations now, two fewer bars, a little grocery store and a highway interchange that bypasses the city.

Tears streamed down Ryan Mallery's face as he awaited his father Dave's return on Tuesday night from Washington, D.C. Dave's return to Spokane International Airport with fellow veterans and Inland Northwest Honor Flight volunteers following a two-day trip to visit war memorials was vastly different than his return from the Vietnam War.
In a rare formal policy speech, Republican front-runner Donald Trump vowed Wednesday to put American security “above all else” if elected president, warning allies they would be left to defend themselves if they don’t “pay their fair share.” He also called for an easing of tensions with Russia “from a position of strength, only.”
The all-volunteer Bonners Ferry Fire Department took home $50,000 in new fire gear for showing off their dance moves in a video competition. Eight firefighters danced to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” for a chance to win ten sets of Viking Turnout Gear.
Clive Strong has amassed endorsements from an array of prominent Idahoans for his run for the Idaho Supreme Court, from former governors of both parties to industry, business and education leaders and elected officials. He’s even been endorsed by both sides in a long-running water fight.
Hillary Clinton effectively sealed her nomination last night. And Donald Trump almost certainly did the same, winning five states by larger margins than the polls and the pundits expected. Why did Trump exceed expectations? Probably lots of small reasons added together. But I’ll call out a few from the field of persuasion.
The Gov. Butch Otter, Rep. Luke Malek and Mayor Steve Widmyer are at Bakery by the Lake this morning having coffee with constituents. Looks like Otter and Widmyer are stumping for Malek, who will face challenger Art Macomber in May's primary.
The Idaho Supreme Court has affirmed a northern Idaho judge's decision to toss out blood draw test results in a fatal crash case because police failed to get a search warrant.
Private Investigator Ted Pulver tells KREM 2 there are questions surrounding the death of VA doctor John Marshall, though police have suspended the investigation: The one conclusion he could come to was there was no way Marshall’s body could have been pulled through the rapids.
Like it or not, Idaho is being memorialized in a new theatrical project: “Idaho: The Comedy Musical.” Notice it’s not billed as a musical comedy. According to its writer, Buddy Sheffield, that’s because the comedy and satire drive the action and the music, not the other way around. (Link below to story and song, "Heck It's a Helluva Day.")
Happy Wednesday, HBO. I see DFO checked in briefly last night and confirmed that he plans to dig into the archives every now and then and will continue featuring some of the Bard's poetry on the blog. Today's stacking up to be a pretty action-packed day. We have some major headlines dropping, much to discuss and I have a ginormous to-do list.
The headline says "Forget Yellowstone ... Snake River Plain's volcano is MUCH BIGGER threat to America: For those that thought Yellowstone super-volcano was one of the biggest natural threats to the USA, think again." Not in our lifetime, right?
Good news for the 1,000 full-time workers at the Chobani yogurt plant in Twin Falls: They are getting "an ownership stake in the yogurt company that could make some of them millionaires." Question: What's the best bonus an employer has given to you?
Benewah County might not have much money in the county coffers for road repairs, but that doesn't mean they aren't addressing the problem. It just takes a little creativity -- and a whole lot of duct tape -- as evidenced by the photo the Benewah County Sheriff's Department has posted to its Facebook page. Question: Best use for duct tape?
After two months of negotiations and the resignation of two councilmen, the Spokane Valley City Council unanimously approved a $411,115.66 settlement Tuesday with fired City Manager Mike Jackson. Question: Anyone else want to get wrongfully fired from a government job?
A proposed North Idaho land swap is on hold while the state Department of Fish and Game attempts to negotiate a public access easement on the property to be traded. The agency wants to acquire a 1,000-acre former horse ranch on the Coeur d’Alene River, restoring wetlands and improving water quality in nearby Black Lake.
The Coeur d’Alene City Council will consider adding a new water feature to McEuen Park. If approved, it will be constructed in honor of fallen Coeur d’Alene Police Sgt. Greg Moore. Moore was killed in the line of duty a year ago.
In a front-runner’s rout, Republican Donald Trump roared to victory Tuesday in five contests across the Northeast and confidently declared himself the GOP’s “presumptive nominee.” Hillary Clinton was dominant in four Democratic races and now is 90 percent of the way to the number she needs to claim her own nomination.

We survived another day together, HBO. We got to enjoy some creepy art by Rachel Dolezal, we found out that Atholians are getting a shopping mall and we shared about the things we like to smell. What fun! And there will be more to come tomorrow. Promise. Have a great night.
Kudos to Bayview Herb for the scoop: Athol is going to be home to a shopping center! Herb confirmed with Mayor Bob Wachter that a shopping center is planned between Highway 95/Howard Road. Rumored anchor is Super 1 Foods. Says Herb: "This long-awaited development is going to change our lives..."
Slice reader Jim Emory says the smell of cow manure is nostalgic.: "It reminds me of days riding my bicycle on small backcountry roads in Germany as a young teenager (my dad was stationed there with the military)." Question: What smells bring you comfort?
KHQ has pictures of every year's Bloomsday Finisher shirt here. Scrolling through, I figured out I participated for three years: 1990-92. I have friends who are Bloomsday fanatics, but I'd rather be in the mountains. How about you? Bloomsday, yay or nay?
Spring came early to the Inland Northwest. The seasonal weather is a great treat for outdoor enthusiasts, but can be rough for allergy sufferers. According to weather.com, the tree pollen count for Tuesday and Wednesday is expected to be very high. Meanwhile, the grass pollen count is expected to be very high over the next three days.
Idaho Republican Party Chairman Steve Yates is striking an optimistic tone as he announces the state party convention, which is set for June 2-4 at the Idaho Center in Nampa. "This convention will serve to unite and launch the party into the 2016 general election from a position of strength," Yates said.
The art tells the story of her people. At least that was story Rachel Dolezal told before Coeur d'Alene Press reporters Jeff Selle and Maureen Dolan outed the prez of Spokane's NAACP as being a Montana-born white girl. An HBO reader has an original painting…
