Update: Winds hamper boater search

In a Facebook post, the Kootenai County Sheriff's Office reports that high winds today have hampered the search for three people who are believed to have drowned as the result of an accident on Lake Coeur d'Alene Sunday night. Searchers have spotted some images in the lake they want to view more closely.

Here's something you don't see on Lake Coeur d'Alene every day -- a plane being pulled by a wave-runner to the city docks. Photographer Don Sausser explained on his Facebook wall: The pilot just arrived from Canada and, after fueling, could not get the engine started. Brooks flying service will kept it moored overnight until mechanical help was available.

Texas colleges fight new gun law 

Stop me if you've heard this one before ... Texas faculty and students are fighting a new gun law that allows concealed handgun license holders to carry guns into college classrooms, buildings and dorms. The law, which took affect Monday, is being challenged by professors who consider it unconstitutional and "dangerously experimental."

Man cited for hitting car w/skateboard 

KREM reports: "Police cited a Post Falls man after he admitted throwing a skateboard at a speeding car driving through his neighborhood. A Post Falls police officer cited Levi Wilk for malicious injury to property after he hit a Volkswagen car that had been speeding through his neighborhood while his children were playing outside."

KREM 2 reports that the recent annual benefit at the Coeur d'Alene Resort Golf Course raised $3.47 million for the Community Cancer Fund. Among the celebrities: NHL legend Wayne Gretzky, Gonzaga men's basketball coach Mark Few and Major League Baseball player Shane Victorino.

Letter: Bicyclists, share the space 

In a letter to the Coeur d'Alene Press, Judith Yancey of Coeur d'Alene asks bicyclists to share the sidewalk with walkers, strollers, elderly folks, children, etc. I enjoy riding my bicycle. And I'm aware of motorists who make life dangerous for bicyclist. But I'm also aware that many bicyclists don't follow common rules of courtesy.

Health Insurance: Right or privilege 10 

Writing for Idaho Politics Weekly, Chuck Malloy relates how difficult life would be for if he couldn't afford health insurance. As a diabetic, Chuck says, he'd have to choose between medicine and paying the rent. About 78,000 Idahoans don't have that choice. They make too much to qualify for state insurance and not enough to qualify for Medicaid.

Exhibit focuses on battle with Aryans 

I'm delighted to hear that the Human Rights Education Institute will reopen at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, with an exhibit that explains the local human-rights battle with the Aryan Nations. When I arrived here in 1984, I was assigned to cover the human rights task force. I am a witness to much of the history that will be displayed at the institute.

Idaho gas 35 cents above average 22 

For some reason, Idaho's gas prices are 35 cents per gallon above the national average, 6th highest in the country. The US average has dropped 25 cents in the past 50 days to an average of $2.13. Yet, we're paying $2.48 per gallon. What's up?

Search continues for missing boaters 

Coeur d'Alene Press: Three people remain missing after Saturday night’s boat crash south of Stevens Point on Lake Coeur d’Alene. Rescue teams searched for the missing people all day Sunday and Monday. The three missing adults are all presumed drowned.
