Thirty-seven years ago today, my wife delivered our son after a long night of labor at Kalispell Regional Hospital in Kalispell, Mont. I was the editor of the Daily Inter Lake in Kalispell, Mont., at the time. I worked the Saturday shift on the day before Junior's birth, putting out the Sunday edition.

Active-shooter-survival class popular

More than 1,000 people in Kootenai County have been trained to survive a mass shooting and interest remains so intense that the sheriff’s office is offering more local classes. The first two classes, scheduled for Aug. 27 and Sept. 24, have already filled, said Gary Shults, the department’s community resources officer.

Opposition kills Black Lake deal 

A 1,000-acre former horse ranch along the Coeur d’Alene River won’t become state property after all. The Idaho Department of Fish and Game had planned to acquire Black Lake Ranch for wildlife habitat and wetlands restoration through a land swap, but opposition to the trade killed the deal.

Bike-in-tree prank gets old at City Park 

Someone has been putting a bicycle in a London Planetree at City Park as a prank. But no one at the city of Coeur d'Alene is laughing. The prank creates a safety hazard and endangers the tree, according to Deputy City Administrator Sam Taylor. The city will keep removing the bike as long as the prankster persists. (With 3 photos)

City removes 3 Tubbs Hill trees 

A contractor is removing three "risk trees" from Tubbs Hill today. The city Parks and Recreation Department and Fire Department manage risk trees on Tubbs Hill yearly. Risk trees are those that are dead, dying or have structural defects -- and are close to hiking trails.

According to Editor Mike Patrick/Coeur d'Alene Press, Orgill, Inc., will buy the former Kimball Office facility and move to North Idaho. Orgill is the world's largest independent distributor of hardware, lumber and many other retail products. That means more than 100 good-paying jobs with benefits are headed our way.

KCSO releases names of other boaters 

The Kootenai County Sheriff's Office has released the names of the 5 individuals on the other boat involved in a triple fatality crash on Lake Coeur d'Alene. 4 or from Washington and one is from Hayden. The sheriff is also seeking additional information from anyone who may have heard or witnessed the accident.
