Wild Card/Monday -- 8.1.16 11 

Mrs O commented last night that July has flown by. She did so as I was dumping the last bucket of rocks, from 3 yards worth of rocks, to complete a garden project that began in spring 2015. July has flown by because I spent 3 of the last 4 weekends building fences and hauling rock. Mrs O gave my time off over the 4th of July for good behavior.

Family in Twin Falls sex case moving

Idaho Statesman: "The family of the 5-year-old disabled girl allegedly victimized at a Twin Falls apartment complex is preparing to move this week to a new residence. “I have to get out of here. I don’t feel safe living here anymore,” the girl’s mother told Slate magazine in a story published online Sunday."

Bump: Clinton up 9 points on Trump 

A new CNN/ORC poll released Monday gives Hillary Clinton a 9-point lead over Donald Trump, suggesting the Democratic presidential nominee won a significant bump from last week’s Democratic National Convention. Clinton is ahead by a margin of 52 percent to 43 percent in a head-to-head match-up, a 7-point bump from CNN/ORC's last poll.

Art on the Green to launch Friday 

The 48th annual Art on the Green will launch again Friday through Sunday on the green lawn west of the North Idaho College student union. The event celebrates seasoned as well as emerging artists and craftsmen. This year's event will have more than 175 art booths.

Poll: GOP incumbents lead handily 

The Republican incumbents running for re-election to the U.S. House and Senate in Idaho are starting off with big leads over their Democratic challengers, according to the latest polling data released Monday. Meanwhile, reports Nathan Brown of the Twin Falls Times-News, the race for the open Idaho Supreme Count opening is tight.

NIC rules trump 'permitless carry' 

CdA Press: "North Idaho College is getting the word out: The Idaho “permitless carry” law doesn’t apply on its campus. Senate Bill 1389 became law on July 1, allowing Idaho residents age 21 and older to carry a concealed firearm without a permit within city limits. However, the new law doesn’t affect current laws and policies at NIC."

Update: 3 boaters presumed dead 

Three boaters in a 1989 Formula 223LS are presumed drown after their boat collided with a 2011 Mastercraft X25 containing 5 adults at about 9:15 p.m. Sunday near Threemile Point on Lake Coeur d'Alene. The missing boaters are identified below, including Justin Honken, 21, of Post Falls. The 5 on the Mastercraft were treated for injuries.

PFPD: Driver speeds, resident cited 

A report from the Sunday swing shift of the Post Falls PD should serve as a cautionary tale for anyone who has yelled at a jerk speeding through a neighborhood. It began with a resident yelling at a lead foot zipping past and ended with the resident being cited for malicious injury to the lead foot's VW Passat.

Mountain lion seen in Dalton Gardens 

A mountain lion was sighted (Sunday) morning in Dalton Gardens. Kootenai County Sheriff's deputies responded around 9:30 to a report of the animal's presence in the area of Baillie Street and Prairie Avenue. After deputies confirmed it was a young mountain lion, the animal ran northbound from the area.

Trump attacks family of dead soldier 156 

National Public Radio reports: "(Donald Trump) continued to pick a fight with Khizr and Ghazala Khan, the parents of an Army captain killed in Iraq. Khizr Khan delivered a powerful speech criticizing Trump at last week's Democratic National Convention." Trump's sustained hostility toward the Khans has made other Republicans deeply uncomfortable.

Hucks: Licensing delays snag first-time teens

My Sunday Huckleberries column kicked off with another look at the long lines and long delays at the driver's licensing department in the Kootenai County Courthouse. This time, two teens seeking their first driver's licenses were lost in the vortex of the never-ending wait that causes veteran drivers to look elsewhere for a new license.

County seeks max tax increase 

Kootenai County property owners, your taxes are going up. By a 2-1 vote Friday, Kootenai County commissioners approved a $96 million budget to present to the public for fiscal year 2017. ... The budget includes a 3 percent property tax increase — the highest increase allowed by the state, reports Mary Malone, Coeur d'Alene Press.
