Sheriff hopeful backs 'organized militia' 51 

In a Q-and-A video interview with Don Bradway of Redoubt News in Bonner County Saturday, Kootenai County sheriff's candidate John Green said he's 100% in favor of an "organized militia" in Idaho. Green said an organized state militia is the only way to prevent the federal government from what he sees as continuing to over reach its authority.

WSP: No death threat against Shea 

The investigation into a voicemail received by Rep. Matt Shea’s office has been closed after the Washington State Patrol determined it does not “rise to the criminal threat level.” Patrol investigators said the obscenity-laced call, which Shea had characterized as “a death threat,” only references an armed occupation of the office.

Cruz tops Trump in national poll

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz leads Donald Trump by two points in a national NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll released Wednesday. Trump had held the top spot in the previous 31 consecutive national polls, according to RealClearPolitics, posting a double-digit lead in all but four.

Texas allows guns in college classrooms 

University of Texas President Greg Fenves has approved rules that will allow concealed handgun license holders to bring their weapons into classrooms. State law requires public universities to allow concealed handguns in classrooms and buildings starting Aug. 1, but also gives campuses some leeway to carve out gun-free zones.

Bill would protect Finicum slayer 

The Oregon House passed a bill Wednesday to shield the identity of the officer who killed standoff spokesman Robert "LaVoy" Finicum. In a bipartisan vote, the House approved legislation that would let a judge bar for 90 days the disclosure an officer's name who uses deadly force. It passed 55-3, and now heads to the Senate.

Enviros blast Idaho wolf kills 

Culling wolf populations with aerial shooting in the "Lolo Zone" of the Clearwater is causing more debate in Idaho. Friends of the Clearwater and other groups are critical of the Idaho Fish & Game Department for shooting the wolves from helicopters the past four years, claiming as many as 50 wolves have been destroyed.

Panel holds literacy bill -- again

A proposal to increase supplemental literacy instruction for young, struggling readers is again on hold in committee — with possible changes or amendments forthcoming. Last week the House Education Committee voted 7-6 to hold House Bill 450 in committee until Thursday.

Hauser man admits killing woman, dumping body 

A North Idaho man pleaded guilty today to killing a Spokane woman and dumping her body in a slough near Hauser Lake last year. Patrick Neil McGhee submitted an Alford plea to voluntary manslaughter in the June 7, 2015, death of Kelly Lynne Sallee, 55, a prostitute he paid to have sex with him at his rural, wooded home 3 miles north of the lake.

Drug deal gone bad lands 3 in jail 

A drug deal gone bad has landed three young area adults in jail, two of whom were allegedly sprayed with pepper spray by the third one. Cody R. Smotherman, 22, of Rathdrum, Tamara D. Mobeck, 21 of Hauser Lake, and Cole E. Wyant, 23, of Coeur d'Alene were arrested on several drug-related charges. (Mug shots below.)

Poll: Trump beats Clinton head to head 

A new poll finds Democratic presidential front-runner Hillary Clinton losing to four top Republican presidential contenders, including Donald Trump, in hypothetical general election matchups. Clinton trails Republican primary front-runner Trump by a 45-43 margin head-to-head, according to a USA Today/Suffolk University poll released Wednesday.

House OKs cookie exemption 35-31 

The House has passed legislation to remove the sales tax from Girl Scout cookies and Boy Scout food sales, passing HB 449 on a 35-31 vote. “Today, only two states tax Girl Scout cookies, Idaho and Hawaii,” Rep. Janet Trujillo, R-Idaho Falls, the bill’s sponsor, told the House. “Forty-eight other states see the benefit of these organizations."
