Update on trash collection change

From Sam Taylor, Deputy City Administrator:

Nearly all Coeur d’Alene garbage customers have received containers from the City’s new service provider, and this is the last week that Waste Management containers will be emptied of trash.

The City of Coeur d'Alene transitioned its garbage hauling service to Coeur d'Alene Garbage July 1. Follow these steps to take to make sure your old Waste Management containers are retrieved.

During the month of July, a team from Waste Management will be working to retrieve WM containers from the approximately 14,000 customers throughout Coeur d’Alene. We want to make this transition as easy as possible, so follow these steps:

  1. Nearly everyone in the City should now have a Coeur d’Alene Garbage toter. If you have not received it, please call (208) 769-2227 if you are a residential customer or (208) 457-1820 if you are a commercial customer. Now that you have your Coeur d’Alene Garbage container, please use only those toters. Do not place garbage in the Waste Management container, unless you have not received the Coeur d’Alene Garbage toter.

  2. On your normal trash pickup day, place ALL cans at the curb the week of July 5 through July 10, even if all containers have trash, or if some have nothing. Either Coeur d’Alene Garbage or Waste Management will empty the containers, pursuant to a deal with the City to ensure service remains uninterrupted. After July 12, place only the Coeur d’Alene Garbage toters at the curb. Place Waste Management’s old containers behind and off the curb to help Coeur d’Alene Garbage efficiently empty the containers that have waste.

  3. Continue to put all containers from both providers out on your normal service day in the fashion described above. Waste Management’s team will eventually get to your segment of the community and will take them away. We estimate the full transition will take approximately one month. We ask that you take the containers off the street after your service pickup each week to help keep streets free of clutter and to assist street sweepers navigating roads.

The City will continue to provide updates through this process. Again, if over the next month you have not received a Coeur d’Alene Garbage Container, residential customers may contact the City at (208) 769-2227. Commercial customers may call Coeur d’Alene Garbage at (208) 457-1820.

If you have any questions regarding this service transition with Waste Management, or about these instructions, please feel free to contact the Waste Management customer service center at (208) 765-4968.
