Weekend Wild Card -- June 18-19 15

I enjoyed sitting on the curb with my wife and 3 other family members Friday evening, watching the assortment of vintage vehicles circle Sherman and Lakeside avenues. It seemed to me that there were a fair share of 1967-69 Chevy Camaro SS cars cruising this...

TGIF Wild Card -- 6.17.16 24

So I'm at a family wedding in the boonies, 12 miles from Redding, Calif., last weekend when I noticed a sign on a fence post: "This property protected by the Second Amendment." For some reason, I thought I was in Idaho, not California. It was a long trip in a relative few days, with some down time in Portland to visit Amy Dearest and Okie Doke.

Ignoring Father's Day

My wife has reminded me three times that Father's Day is Sunday. At church, we celebrate the day by asking fathers to pick numbers to win a pie of their choosing. At home, I could care less. I appreciate a call from Junior and Amy Dearest. Otherwise, I celebrate Father's Day as the one annual observance that I don't have to remember.

Quotable Quote

My hope was that at least for a few hours, we could lay down our politically divisive views on gun control, religion and homosexuality and simply be human beings acknowledging the horrible loss of life. Perhaps grieve in unity for just a bit with the families of the bereaved -- Cindy Hval. More below.

Crosses, one for each victim, line a walkway as a memorial to those killed in the Pulse nightclub mass shooting a few blocks from the club early Friday, June 17, 2016, in Orlando, Fla. Experts say it’s too soon to gauge whether a week of horrific news out of Orlando will hurt tourism there. But travel agents are not seeing widespread cancellations, and many travelers say they’re committed to their theme park vacations. (AP Photo/David Goldman)
