Hump Day Wild Card -- 3.23.16 31 

The Idaho Democrats have caucused. Bernie is king. In Idaho and Vermont. The Idaho GOP have closed primaried. And Ted Cruz is king. At least in Idaho and his own mind. When the smoke clears, it'll be The Donald versus The Hillary. And I'll have to decide if I can vote for either in the general election. The answer from this many months out is no.

Urban renewal bill limps along 

The urban renewal "reform" bill that legislators like state Sen. Mary Souza, R-Coeur d'Alene, wants so badly may be amended to death. The current version, notes alarmed fellow legislators, is a far cry from the one recommended by an interim committee that included Souza and her House sidekick, Rep. Kathy Sims.

But he expects that subsequent days will begin as usual without fanfare. At this point, he writes, he awakens to the realities of aging -- and is happy that he's escaped the Grim Reaper so long.

House punts on Medicaid gap 

When all else fails re: a controversial issue, legislators form committees, so they can tell their constituents that they did something. Such was the case today when the House voted 39-30 to pass a resolution to form an interim study committee to study the Medicaid gap. Minority Leader John Rusche said he action just kicked the can down the road.

Jamie Pendleton, who sparked controversy with his “Date Grape Kool-Aid” drink at his downtown Spokane bar and violated federal trademark law for using Gonzaga University’s bulldog mascot in bar promotions, has admitted using a Post Falls man’s debit card to steal almost $1,000.

JFAC backs Clagstone easement 

Despite all the posturing by the non-dynamic Bonner County legislative duo of Reps. Heather Scott and Sage Dixon, the Joint Finance & Appropriations Committee backed funding for the Clagstone Meadows conservation easement 17-3. Sen. Shawn Keough, co-chair of the budget committee, was a voice of reason on the matter.

Otter lets minimum wage bill through 

Gov. Butch Otter has allowed HB 463, the minimum wage pre-emption bill, to become law without his signature, saying he was “philosophically torn” over the issue. “Self-determination and local control – like independence and self-reliance – are Idaho values,” Otter wrote in a letter to House Speaker Scottt Bedke.

Senate OKs school budget 35-0

What does the Idaho Senate know that Reps. Vito Barbieri, Kathy Sims and Shannon McMillan don't. The Senate unanimously passed all bills involved in the education budget this AM. Barbieri & McMillan voted against all 7 bills. And Sims voted against 4 of them. Remember that when it comes time to vote in the May primaries.
