I need to do some shopping Saturday to take care of the Moms in my life. I asked my almost 91YO mother what she wanted for Mother's Day. And, of course, she said simply that she wanted to have her children present on Mother's Day. Four of us sibs will join her for a Mother's Day brunch on Sunday.

TGIF Wild Card -- 5.6.16

I met my grand-niece for the first time at a vacation rental in Fort Grounds Thursday. She's a cutie. Evie. My sister, Lil, and her family are visiting from California. Lil's an executive for a San Joaquin Valley winery. As kids, she and I used to have monumental fights over silly things. She's 4 years younger. But she never back down from me.

Labrador: Ryan should fire advisers 

Congressman Raul Labrador said on CNN's "Situation Room" that he was "disappointed" with Speaker Paul Ryan for withholding his support of presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump this week. "I think that the Speaker of the House needs to reconsider what he's doing. I think that he really needs to consider firing some of his advisers."

Embattled wannabe amends report 

Late this afternoon, legislative candidate M.C. “Chick” Heileson filed an amended campaign finance report, removing four previously reported $1,000 contributions to his campaign from companies owned by eastern Idaho businessman Doyle Beck – suggesting he’d given that money back – but keeping two others in.

Pastor shooting suspect returns to Kootenai Co 

The man accused of shooting a Coeur d’Alene pastor in March arrived at the Kootenai County Jail Friday, after being transported from the East Coast by the U.S. Marshal Service. Kyle Odom, 30, was arrested outside the White House in Washington, D.C., two days after the March 6 shooting in the parking lot of Altar Church.

ISP officer involved in shooting ID'd

The Idaho State Police trooper involved in a shooting exchange with a fugitive April 19 has been identified as Corporal Shane Grady. Neither Grady or suspect J. Scott Salmond were hit in the exchange. Salmond eluded capture that day but was later caught. He is being held in the Spokane County Jail. Corporal Grady is still on a leave of absence.

In the glory days of the grass-seed industry, farmers would burn their fields on the Rathdrum Prairie, triggering regionwide protest. On July 29, 2002, the late Tom Wobker, the Bard of Sherman Avenue, wrote about a judicial decision that apparently came down on the side of the farmers.

Oregon standoff defendant Sean Anderson apologized Wednesday for his video rants that went viral when he was one of the last occupiers at the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge. Anderson, 47, dressed in the standard blue jail scrubs, stood beside his lawyer and said he was sorry.

Poet laureate shares art that saved him 

Tod Marshall, Washington's poet laureate, has visited Coeur d'Alene at least twice this year -- once when he attended Blogfest 2016 in honor of the Bard of Sherman Avenue reveal. And then more recently to head a group of 9 poets sharing their rhymes at Coeur d'Alene Library. Now, the Inlander tells the story how Marshall's art saved him from drugs.

Idaho Gives rakes in ^$1M

Idahoans donated roughly $1 million to more than 800 nonprofits and charities Thursday as part of "Idaho Gives," the 24-hour, online fundraising blitz. Organizers say nearly 7,500 people made donations to help the causes of nonprofits taking part in the fourth annual statewide fundraiser.

A few minutes ago, the Cheney (Wash.) School District Facebook wall posted photos of the 3 finalists for its superintendent position. The three include Coeur d'Alene Superintendent Matt Handelman. This is the 2nd job that Handelman has sought in Washington this spring.

Food Porn: Pops Smokin at Stateline

Pops’ Smokin’ It is back in North Idaho. The barbecue food truck has been parked in Stateline since March, vending slow-cooked, smoked meats and sides such as baked beans and macaroni and cheese. Business picks up Friday and Saturday nights when Nashville North, the country music venue that shares its unpaved parking lot is open.

Charter among challenge high schools 

A ninth Idaho high school had made the Washington Post’s annual list of America’s most challenging high schools. It’s not a newbie. Vallivue High School in Caldwell was added to the list. Vallivue had been on the list in the past, but was omitted when the first list came out in April. Also on the list? Coeur d'Alene Charter Academy.

Scorecard: Fire suppression bill vote 

In her weekly Scorecard report on legislative votes, Sandy Patano of North Idaho Political Action Committee points out that the usual suspects -- Scott, Dixon, Vick, Barbieri, Mendive, Cheatham and Sims -- voted against a 2015 bill that allocated $27 million for fire suppression prior to the devastating 2015 fire season that had been predicted.

CdA resort opened 30 years ago

It was 30 years ago (Thursday) that The Coeur d’Alene Resort opened to the public. “It was really an exciting and wonderful day,” said Hagadone Hospitality president and Resort co-owner Jerry Jaeger. It was a drizzly day, he said. People stood in the rain for hours to be some of the first to explore the fancy new resort.
