Vets' Day Wild Card -- 11.11.16 99

I'm taking my traditional after-election day breather today. Unfortunately, my Super Subs are busy. So I'll post this Wild Card to cover Veterans Day. Behave yourselves, as you've been doing. I appreciate you Merry Hucksters. You make coming to work each day more fun than I should be having.

Parting Shot -- 11.10.16

U.S. Under Secretary of the Army Patrick J. Murphy (in suit and tie) drops to the ground to lead a group of Army re-enlistees and young enlistees following a swearing-in ceremony at the National September 11 Memorial during a five day-long Salute to Service honoring veterans ahead of Veterans' Day, Thursday in New York. Veterans Day is Friday.

Wild Card/Thursday -- 11.10.16 149

On Tuesday, I was prepared to honor the office of the presidency, no matter which way the election turned out. If Democrat Hillary Clinton had won, as most expected, she would be my president. If Republican Donald Trump would have won -- as he did, of course -- he would be my president. Now, he's going to be.

Sneaky CPD cracks down on speeders in Midtown

Depending how fast you were driving down Third Street Wednesday morning, the two men you zipped past in a 10-foot high aerial bucket probably looked like utility workers. They weren’t. They’re employed by the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, and boy, did they have their eyes on you. Ryan Collingwood/Press reports ...

Cis to protesters: Grow up 36

Cis/Simple Mind has been with Huckleberries Online from the beginning, way back in February 2016. She's a fountain of common sense. Below, you can read her reaction to the goofs who are blocking traffic around the country as part of a protest against the election of President-elect Donald Trump.

Mrs. Nina Oss, "Queen for a Day." (Newspaper clipping courtesy of Christina Oss LaBang)

Recalling when Mother was 'Queen for a Day' 10

Do you remember the old show, "Queen for a Day" with Jack Bailey? Women would compete during the game show of the 1940s-1964 to become "Queen for a Day" and win prizes. Well, the mother of Christina Oss LaBang and Christina's brother, whom we know as Stickman, won the honor. She had quite a story to tell host Jack Bailey and his audience.

Providence to cut jobs

Providence is telling employees it will eliminate some positions in the next two months due to “financial challenges” and “a fundamental shift in our industry.” Providence, the largest health care provider in Washington and largest employer in Spokane, hasn’t said how many positions will be cut in Spokane or its other 15 locations across 5 states.

Love Story 40 years in the making

"As love stories go, Bill Bartlett and Zettalee Rollins’ is fairly new – the couple have only been together three months. But this is a tale that’s been 40 years in the making," writes Cindy Hval in her latest SR Love Story. With all the anger & anxiety re: Tuesday's election, a love story might be appropriate today.

My 2 Cents: The Shire is still safe

The Shire is still safe, despite what some believe. The Shire, of course, is the mythical home of the Hobbits in J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy. It's a place of peace, tranquility, and, I imagine, beauty. I refer to Coeur d'Alene, at times, as The Shire. In my Shire, political orcs, goblins and worse are always trying to overthrow it.

Idaho turnout likely to be 75-80%

Counties around Idaho are posting some amazingly high turnout figures for Tuesday’s election, but it turns out those aren’t actually the final numbers – because they don’t take into account same-day voter registrations. Betsy Russell/Eye on Boise reports why we won't know actual voter turnout % for awhile ...

CDAIndie: A sad spectacle to reach

In a comment on HucksOnline today, CDAIndependent comments that he could have "made a killing selling anti-depressants at the Democratic campaign watch party Tuesday night." For all practical purposes, the Democratic Party is dying even in Coeur d'Alene. Question: What should local Democrats do?

What about Obamacare? 26

One of the greatest losers, as a result of Tuesday's election, is Obamacare. The fight against Obamacare was a uniting battle cry for Republicans throughout the nation, much like the Contract with America was in 1994. The Republicans have the votes and a willing president to do away with Obamacare. What do you think they should do?

Lock her up, really? 65

I usually don't give vent to trollish ideas, but commenter Jane Bond posted something that needs addressing, the goofy notion out there that defeated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton should be locked for crimes largely imagined.
