My friend Leslie Gillet got married in Sandpoint, but not without incident. After her rehearsal run-through at the Lutheran Church Friday, the kitchen of the church caught fire. All the decorations and hors d'oeurves went up in smoke or were damaged by smoke. When Mrs. O and I arrived at the church Sunday, the lot was empty.

Man survives grizzly attack -- twice
A man scouting for elk in Montana surprised a sow grizzly bear with cubs and was attacked not once, but TWICE on Saturday. "Yeah, life sucks in bear country," Todd Orr, 50, said with his face covered in blood as he made a short video at the scene. Rich Landers/SR Outdoors reports.

Huckleberries has learned from a forum official that Bingham was asked face-to-face to attend the forum. But he still hasn't responded, as the forum draws ever closer.

Letter: Wrong spot for kayak launch 11
In a letter to HucksOnline, Walkabout insists that the city of Coeur d'Alene has picked the wrong spot to install a kayak launch. The city will destroy a pristine spot for families and Tubbs Hill hikers, if it goes ahead with plans to put the launch near East Tubbs Hill Park. She says Independence Point is a better location.
County booze violations outside norm
Most dispensers of alcohol across the state of Idaho are fairly compliant with Idaho liquor laws. But Kootenai County, for some reason, isn't. It's an outlier. Businesses that sell alcohol in Kootenai County have a compliance rate of only 63% since 2014. Ryan Collingwood/Coeur d'Alene Press reports.

Donald Trump declared a loss of $916 million on his income tax returns for 1995, and – because of tax rules that favor wealthy real estate investors – he could have used that loss to avoid paying any federal income taxes for up to 18 years, according to a report in the New York Times.
NIC trustee candidate drops out
Geri Wile of Post Falls, a candidate for the North Idaho College Board of Trustees, has dropped out of her race with Trustee Brad Murray of Rathdrum. Wile dropped out for health reasons. But her name will still be on the November ballot because she didn't drop out in time.

Outdoor gear giants Bass Pro and Cabela’s will combine in a $4.5 billion deal announced Monday. Bass Pro is paying Cabela’s shareholders $65.50 cash per share. The deal creates uncertainty about jobs in Cabela’s home state of Nebraska. Cabela's has 2 stores in the Northwest, including the one at State Line.
Dalton Gardens man faces 7th DUI 14
A Dalton Gardens resident was jailed Saturday after being accused of driving under the influence in Kootenai County for the seventh time. Paul A. Hendzel, 54, was pulled over about 10 p.m. after callers reported that a reckless driver nearly hit several vehicles on Interstate 90 as well as near Hanley Avenue and Government Way

Labrador angry as delegation splits 2
Betsy Russell begins her Eye on Boise column by reporting on the split in the Idaho delegation re: the continuing resolution to fund the government, which avoided a government shutdown by two days. Congress passed the bill overwhelmingly. Rep. Labrador and Sen. Risch voted no. Rep. Simpson and Sen. Crapo voted yes.

If you trust the Internet, you'll learn that Idaho has a law that prevents merry-go-rounds from operating on Sundays. It's called the Sunday Rest Law.
