Eye On Olympia

Or maybe Tom Waits…

At the Democrats' Election Night party in Seattle, the music consisted of "recognizable jazz standards and patriotic songs with a jazz twist" -- Alexander's Ragtime Band, Amazing Grace, Camptown Races, The Caissons Go Rolling Along and, surprisingly, Dixie.

(At the Republican Party, they were busy chanting "Di-no! Di-no! Di-no!...")

For a more fitting refrain in the governor's race, we would've turned to the wisdom of rhythm guitarist Tom Petty: "The Waiting (is the Hardest Part)."

As we type this two days after Election Day, Democrat Christine Gregoire leads Republican Dino Rossi by about 14,300 votes, out of roughly 2 million counted. Hundreds of thousands of votes remain to be counted, with the next round between 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. today.

Short takes and breaking news from the Washington Legislature and the state capital.
