CONSERVATION -- Idaho is offering several new specialty vehicle license plates this year, including one that benefits mountain biking programs and one to help manage Idaho's premier wilderness areas.

The wildernes plate, sponsored by the Selway-Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation, benefits trail maintenance and wilderness stewardship in Idaho’s Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness and Selway-Bitterroot Wilderness.

The specialty plate was released in February featuring wilderness artwork from Boise artist Ward Hooper, a native of Grangeville.

Read on for details for Idaho residents wanting to buy one of these specialty plates.

1.     Buy now in person:  Plates can be purchased at local DMV offices today.

2.     Buy now online:  Personalized plates can be ordered today online at http://itd.idaho.gov/dmv.

3.     Buy when your current plate expires:  When residents receive their renewal registration notices, they can stop by their local DMV office to request their Wilderness plate, or order their personalized plate online at http://itd.idaho.gov/dmv.

A $35 special program fee is charged when the new plate is first purchased and each subsequent renewal will have a $25 special program fee.  These program fees are in addition to all other applicable annual registration fees.

In the case of the wilderness plates, all but $13 of the proceeds from the plates will go the Selway-Bitterroot Frank Church Foundation’s trail maintenance and wilderness stewardship efforts in Idaho.

This new plate may be displayed on passenger vehicles, light trucks with a gross vehicle weight of up to 26,000 pounds, motor homes, and camper trailers.  These special plates can also be personalized with up to five letters and/or numbers.

The cost to personalize these plates is $25 in addition to both the special program fees and all other required annual registration and plate fees.  The renewal fee for a personalized plate is an additional $15 per year.

Individuals can also purchase sample versions of the Idaho Wilderness plates from the Idaho Transportation Department for $30.  Sample plates can be personalized at no additional cost.  These plates cannot be displayed on motor vehicles, but they do make unique gifts.
