Saturday’s paddleboarding classes on Spokane River cancelled

Doggy paddling: Diana Roberts of Spokane, pictured on Lake Coeur d’Alene near Heyburn State Park, hasn’t convinced her dogs – Rufaro (sitting) and Murungu (lying down) – that the sport is called SUP: Standup paddle boarding. “You know how hard I worked to get the dogs to sit/lay down so we had a slight hope of not ending up in the drink every five minutes,” Roberts added. WATERSPORTS -- Stand-up paddleboarding classes and tours scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 5, from the Spokane River's revived access at Division Street have been cancelled, Spokane City Parks staffers say.

"We hope to try and offer another opportunity this month weather permitting," said Ryan Griffith, outdoors program director.

Saturday weather forecast for Spokane:

Rain before noon, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after noon. High near 58. Calm wind becoming south 5 to 7 mph in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch, except higher amounts possible in thunderstorms.

The Division Street access, reachable through the convention center parking area or from the south end of the bridge, was recently improved and reopened after Convention Center construction was completed.

Original plans for the convention center expansion would have cut off access paddlers and rafters had used for years through the former Shenanigan’s Restaurant parking area. Boaters commented on the Spokane Public Facilities District draft plans to demand continued access.
