Dry fly action picking up on North Idaho trout streams

FISHING -- Things are looking up for fly fishers -- be cause the fish are.

Here's a report from Sean Visintainer of Silver Bow Fly Shop on emerging dry fly action that picked up in the past week.

End of March usually means a big increase in dry fly fishing activity on our local rivers like the North Fork Coeur d'Alene and St. Joe rivers. Mayfly hatches like the March Browns and BWO's ramp up and the stonefly hatches do as well.

The two most important stones are the Nemoura stones and the skwala stones. While we don't see the intense hatches that other rivers like the Yakima, Clark Fork, or Bitterroot rivers see, our local rivers get enough to really bring up the trout.

Prior to the mid-day hatches make sure you have a variety of nymphs... Pat's Rubber Legs, San Juans, small beadhead patterns or streamers. Most hatches will be from noon on through the early evening right now.

Oh, and in case you are wondering, the angler in the video (below), Kelby, hooked that fish on a Nemoura Stone pattern.
