The Slice

Things you wish you had said to famous people

I have a friend who, back when he was a kid, encountered major league baseball player Rico Petrocelli.

My friend impressed Petrocelli by pronouncing his last name in the authentic Italian manner. Ever since hearing that story, I have thought "How perfect."

Lots of us have had brushes with famous people. But, assuming it is appropriate in the moment to say something, we don't always have the presence of mind to say the right thing.

Have you ever wished for a do-over in such a context?

I have. About 30 years ago, I found myself standing near Carl Wilson at an airport baggage carrousel. Like all of us there, he was stuck waiting.

So I approached him and thanked him for the pleasure the Beach Boys had given me over the years. He could not have been more gracious.

I cannot remember if we shook hands, but I know I withdrew in a friendly way after about 10 seconds.

Anyway, I do not recall exactly what I said. But I know what I later wished I had told him.

I wish I had said something that made it clear I was not mistaking him for one of his brothers.

I wish I said, "Your lead vocal on 'God Only Knows' was stunning. Thank you for that."
