The Slice

In the wake of Macy’s news

It's inevitable that just about everyone around here will now weigh in on the future of downtown Spokane.

Some forecasts will be bleak, whether coming from people who know what they are talking about or from those whose life force is animated by a gleeful desire to envision doom and ruin.

But there's no doubt. Losing Macy's is a blow.

Of course, there have been predictions before that Spokane's city center would become a ghost town. And yet it always seems to rally and attract new energy.

I think it will this time, too.

Still, there's no denying that you can hear echoes of despair in the empty buildings. But the answer to the question "What's next?" doesn't have to be surrender.
