The Slice

When your dream job rolls by

Ever looked up and seen your ideal occupation?

I was waiting for a flight in the Phoenix airport the other morning when a police officer rode by on a fat-tire bicycle.

It was clear that was his everyday patrol vehicle. And riding around inside the airport is his job. I thought, "Hey, I could do that."

Don't get me wrong. I like my job. But isn't it prudent to be on the lookout for backup plans in these turbulent times?

Now, I'm not minimizing the requirements that would allow a bike cop to perform his or her duties. I realize the job is not a joke.

But I know I could do the riding part. And I probably could answer questions and give directions. Maybe give someone a ham sandwich if it looked like that person needed it.

What if there were a crisis? Well, I'd do what the pros do. I'd call for backup.
