The Slice

Romance, peanuts and carrots

Here are a couple of stories readers shared.

"Fifty years ago I met a guy named Bob Lonn from Colfax while I was a student at WSU," wrote Suzanne Lonn. "We began dating in October and when Valentine's Day rolled around, he surprised me with an engagement ring.

"Not knowing him too well but wanting to give him something, I presented him with a nice big jar of salted peanuts.

"He went home with the peanuts AND the ring although I did accept it before too long.

"Every year I give him salted peanuts.

"We'll celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary in September."

Deb Hunsicker shared this.

"I love carrots. I'm a long-distance hiker, and my trail name is 'Walking Carrot' because I always hike with carrots.

"On our first Valentine's Day together, my husband Phil (then boyfriend) made a wonderful dinner for me, and the best part was the salad. He had figured out that if you cut a long narrow trench the full length of a carrot, you will get heart-shaped carrot slices when you slice it. So my Valentine's Day salad was covered in heart-shaped carrots."
