WALeg Day 11: Senate committee to hear med school plans for Spokane

OLYMPIA -- The state's two major universities will get a chance to explain their plans for medical school expansion in Spokane before the Senate Higher Education Committee today.

Washington State University President Elson Floyd and University of Washington President Michael Young have a 1:30 p.m. date with the committee, whose chairwoman Barbara Bailey has said she's undecided about the different plans but thinks the state needs more medical professionals.

"We need to look at ways that we can collaborate and utilize available resources wisely," Bailey, R-Oak Harbor, said in announcing the work session, which comes a day after bills were introduce to open the door for WSU to start a medical school.

Also up today is a hearing on one of several proposals to blend the state's medical and recrational marijuana systems. Marijuana activists will gather on the Capitol steps after the hearing.

It's also Black Thursday, when the motorcycle activists from ABATE, for A Brotherhood Against Totalitarian Enactments, come to lobby for their favorite bills.  Not sure if there will be any synergy between the marijuana activists and the biker activists. The Food Industry and the service employees union are also in town, as are more than 100 folks from the Spokane area in a lobbying journey coordinated by Greater Spokane Inc.

And there's a busy day of hearings on a wide range of topics. Here's the full schedule.
