ID v WA: The cost to run for Legislature

The average state Senate campaign raised 10 times as much in Washington as in Idaho last year. The average House campaign raised almost four times as much.

Those figures are contained in the latest report from the National Institute on Money in State Politics, which recently released its report of how much was raised and spent in state contests in 2014.

The races for Idaho's 35 Senate seats -- some were one-person contests -- drew more than $1.2 million in contributions, for an average of $23,117 per candidate. Washington had 25 seats on the ballot -- and a few noncontests as well -- but candidates raised more than $10.6 million, and averaged $221,862 per candidate.

Both states had their full Houses on the ballot, which means 70 seats in Idaho and 98 in Washington. All told, Idaho candidates raised about $2.5 million and Washington candidates more than $14.7 million.

The average House candidate in Idaho raised $21,038 compared to $81,957.

All this was part of about $1.2 billion in contributions to legislative candidates in 2014. That was down slightly, from $1.3 billion, in 2012.
