WaLeg Day 8: Not a day off in Olympia

OLYMPIA -- The Martin Luther King Jr. Day holiday is not a day off at the Legislature, although the House did mark the occasion with speeches when it opened Monday morning.

But many other people  have the day off, so the Capitol is more crowded than usual with people  hoping to catch the ear of their legislator on a particular issue.

Planned Parenthood has scores of teens in pink T-shirts walking the hallways, and the Service Employees International Union has members with blue-and-white scarves participating in a lobbying day.

Senate Republicans have another hearing on the problems at the Department of Corrections that resulted in thousands of inmates getting early release dates because their "good time" was miscalculated. This time the Law and Justice Committee is partnering with the Government Accountability and Reform Committee to talk to department leaders about "failures of management."

Law and Justice had a hearing on the issue last Monday, and said it was issuing subpoenas last Wednesday.

House Commerce and Gaming has a hearing on a bill to prohibit fantasy sports games, and an executive session on a bill that would require cities or counties that want to ban legal marijuana businesses to get voter approval.
