Washington State has two more practices today, which is no shock. That I found two stories about Stanford, the Cougars opponent in the season opener, now that's a shock. For those stories, and more, read on.

• Washington State: The weather is heating up again. So is the competition for the starting spots, with decisions having to be made in the next week or so. Yesterday, the Cougars took those competitions into Martin Stadium as they get ready for the season and Pac-10 opener against Stanford on Sept. 5. Here's our story. ... Former WSU quarterback Alex Brink is working again. ... CougCenter previewed the running backs, the subject of the first position preview we will post tonight. ... As we told you Saturday, WSU received a commitment from a receiver out Lynden with a really great football name. ... That's it for this morning.

• Around the Pac-10: I had planned to save Bud Withers' Cal preview for the Cal section, but I found so many Bear stories (one), I can put it here. ... Buster Sports Nick Daschel wants every Pac-10 school to let go of something. ... Washington: The Huskies have made decisions about the starting linebackers, according to Todd Milles in the News Tribune. ... The Times' Jerry Brewer has a column about one of those starters. ... Oregon State: Only football players could make reading a competition. ... Oregon: The American Football Coaches Association want games to start with a handshake between teams. Boise State has decided that's a good idea. The Ducks Jeremiah Masoli, knocked out last years against the Broncos by a late hit, tight end, who was battling for the starting spot. ... Stanford: No wonder we don't get much out of the Cardinal. They held a scrimmage yesterday and no one was allowed to watch. And Toby Gerhart (above) hardly participated. ... I have been wondering when I would see a variation of this headline this year. It will probably show up in some form at least 100 more times. Lucky – OK, I couldn't resist either – the story is good. ... USC: Aaron Corp is expected to return to practice next week. ...UCLA: Injuries, sometimes even big ones, are becoming common around the conference. One hit UCLA's offensive line Wednesday. ... Arizona State: One receiver expects the Sun Devils to rediscover the offensive magic this year. ... Arizona: The Wildcats have at least one linebacker with great instincts for the ball.

• That's it for this morning. We'll be out at practice much of the day. But we'll be back posting this afternoon. Until then …
