Vandals wallop BSU; Akey shuffles staff

All that agony caused by an excruciating overtime loss to Boise State? The Vandals erased much of it Saturday night in pasting their most ardent rival. Keep reading for more on the 79-55 win and news about Robb Akey's coaching staff.

Idaho dismantled the Broncos 79-55 at Boise's Taco Bell Arena to pick up their third win in four games since falling to BSU in Moscow. It was Idaho's most decisive win in the 40-year series over their intra-state rival. Luciano de Souza, a sharpshooting Brazilian quiet for much of the season, unleashed four 3-pointers in a 7-minute first-half span to key a 14-0 run. UI went on to build a 45-19 halftime lead.

Idaho also got another encouraging (and efficient) performance from Luiz Toledo, who had 11 points on 5-of-6 floor shooting. UI (11-11, 3-7) is now seventh in the WAC standings, and just two games behind fifth-place Fresno State.

One football note: The Idaho Statesman reports that Robb Akey will juggle his staff to allow offensive coordinator Steve Axman to assume quarterback coaching duties. Akey is now looking for a tight ends coach after Axman will give up that role. The shuffling comes after former quarterbacks coach Jonathan Smith was hired as Montana's offensive coordinator.

The Statesman's story also points out that UI is in talks with Washington State in restarting the Palouse border war, perhaps in 2013.
