Johnson’s status for GU game uncertain

I talked with San Diego coach Billy Grier for a few minutes about an hour ago. The former GU assistant said senior guard Brandon Johnson's status for Saturday's game against the Bulldogs won't be known until tomorrow. Johnson (groin injury) didn't play in Thursday's loss to Portland.

Read on for a short preview of the contest that will run in Saturday's S-R.

Short-handed San Diego visits Gonzaga tonight at 7 at the McCarthey Athletic Center. The Toreros (9-17, 2-8) lost senior guard De’Jon Jackson last week to a season-ending knee injury and played without senior guard Brandon Johnson (groin) in Thursday’s 70-56 loss at Portland.

Head coach Billy Grier, in his third season at San Diego after 16 years as a Gonzaga assistant, said Johnson was limited in practice earlier this week. “He’s day to day,” Grier said Friday.

Johnson is San Diego’s all-time assists leader (504) and he needs five points to break Gyno Pomare’s school record of 1,725. If Johnson becomes USD’s all-time leading scorer, he would become the only player in WCC history to be his school’s career points and assists leader.

San Diego has lost eight of nine, including a 68-50 setback against Gonzaga last month. Jackson and Johnson combined for 27 of USD’s 50 points on 9-of-29 shooting.
