A quick update on ex-Zag G.J. Vilarino:

Former Gonzaga Bulldogs guard G.J. Vilarino has decided to continue his playing career at Appalachian State, his father Gerry said Sunday.

Vilarino played in 25 games as a freshman at GU. He averaged 7.8 minutes and 2.3 points. He made 47.4 percent of his field-goal attempts.

“This particular situation is one that they’re going to build a team around him basically,” Gerry Vilarino said. “They’re going to give him a chance to have the ball in his hands early on. The relationship part was so important and he has a really good relationship with the coaching staff.”

Vilarino will have to sit out next season under NCAA transfer rules. Appalachian State, a Southern Conference member located in Boone, N.C., is coached by Jason Capel, younger brother of Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel. Jeff Capel Sr. is an assistant with the Charlotte Bobcats.
